Bern’s Old Town is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful historic centers, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, charming streets, and the iconic Lauben—the city’s famous covered arcades. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this part of the capital invites you to take a leisurely walk through history while enjoying modern shops, cafés, and cultural landmarks.

Starting from Bern’s main train station, a stroll down Kramgasse takes you through the heart of the Old Town. Along the way, you’ll pass 16th-century fountains, picturesque sandstone buildings, and one of Bern’s most famous sights, the Zytglogge Clock Tower. This medieval clock, with its intricate astronomical dial and moving figurines, has been marking time in Bern for centuries and remains a highlight of any visit.

The Lauben, Bern’s 6 kilometers of covered arcades, make the Old Town especially unique. These arcades provide shelter from the sun, rain, or snow, making Bern a perfect city for strolling in any weather. Beneath them, you’ll find an eclectic mix of boutiques, bookshops, artisan stores, and traditional Swiss brands, making window shopping an experience in itself.

A walk through the Old Town also leads past the Federal Palace (Bundeshaus), home to the Swiss Parliament, and ends at the Nydegg Bridge, which offers a stunning view of the Aare River and Bern’s green surroundings. From here, you can visit the Bear Park, where Bern’s symbolic bears live in a natural riverside habitat.
