Portree is the largest town on the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It has had a long history as an important trading port since prehistoric times. Visitors to Portree appreciate its scenic beauty, and they find plenty to do here, from enjoying the culinary scene to exploring nearby natural landmarks such as the Storr or the Quiraing. There are also many historic sites in Portree including MacNab's Inn, which served as the last meeting place of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald in 1746. Portree is known for having the last manual telephone exchange in the UK, which closed in 1976. In 2016, over 150,000 people stopped at the VisitScotland centre in Portree, making it the busiest place on the island. This makes Portree a great home base for visitors who want to explore all the wonders the Isle of Skye has to offer.
