Aldeyjarfoss is located in the highlands north of the Skjálfandafljót river. Aldeyjarfoss is nevertheless one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country. The Cascade is still 20 meters high and flows into a magnificent milky blue lagoon. The setting is superb thanks to the geology of the site. The water flows into a narrow gorge and magnificent hexagonal black basalt columns.

From the main car park, it takes about 15 minutes (one way) to cover the 1.2 km that lead to the waterfall. The waterfall is about an hour and a half from Akureyri and 45 minutes from Goðafoss. The easiest and best known access to the waterfall is via the South Rim and Route 842.

Access from the south shore via the 842 : This is the best known access and the one to be preferred. Along road number 1, shortly before Goðafoss when arriving from Akureyri, road 842, accessible to all types of vehicles, heads south. This is a 40 km dirt road in fairly good condition. We then cross the valley of Bárðardalur.

After about 40 km, near Myri's farm, the road then becomes F26, the famous Sprengisandur track, and is only authorized for 4x4s to cover the remaining 4 km to the parking lot of the waterfall. It is at this moment that a panel indicates the waterfall. It is then necessary to raise a sheep barrier and close well behind to reach the end of the track.

Some tourists leave their non-4x4 vehicle at the barrier to complete the few kilometers on foot.

From the car park, a small path heads towards the waterfall.
