Much less famous than its majestic neighbor Skogafoss, Kvernufoss is one of those little-known treasures of southern Iceland. Kvernufoss is neither the most powerful nor the highest of the country's waterfalls but it is well worth the detour.

Very often, tourists pass near the waterfall without even knowing it...

it is located near Skogafoss and even closer to the Skogar museum since you have to park in the parking lot of this one. Don't look for a sign, Kvernufoss is nowhere indicated.

The short hike is very short since it only takes 800 m (1.6 km round trip) and about twenty minutes to get there from the car park. The hike is very straightforward and crosses a meadow for quite a while before the trail climbs a bit towards the gorge.

The arrival in the gorge is magnificent and the colors are reminiscent of the impressive canyon of Fjaðrárgljúfur
