The starting point for this two-day tour is Tierfehd in Linthal, where the mountains already tower up on both sides. The valley station is accessible by public transport, but the connections should be studied well in advance (train to Linthal and from there you will need to call Taxi Edy for a lift. But in general, I truly recommend to come by car. From Tierfehd, the automated gondola floats up the first 1000 metres in altitude From the top station, follow the signposts in the direction of the Muttseehütte. You leave the familiar world behind and immerse yourself in this unique, beautiful and mystical mountain world.
After 1.5 hours of hiking, you leave the lush green hills for the last steep ascent, which is more reminiscent of a lunar landscape. But the tough last metres are worth it, because as soon as you reach the plain, Limmerensee already sparkles in front of you. The reservoir presents itself from its best side between the towering surrounding mountains. A short stretch follows to the Muttsee hut, which is clearly visible next to the Muttsee, the upper reservoir.
You can book your dinner at the hut or do it as we: enjoy sunset at Muttenkopf and have your own picnic dinner. Just make sure to book enough in advance since on the weekends it's often booked out and anyway only accessible from late June to Mid October.
The Muttenkopf can be reached in about 20 minutes and offers a unique view over the entire reservoir. This is also where all the famous Instagram photos come from.
Distance: 10.5 km Duration: 4.5h Ascent: 920m Descent: 920m
