The hike to Helvetestinden offers an adventurous and scenic experience in the Lofoten Islands, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, fjords, and the iconic Bunes Beach. Accessible only by boat, this hike combines the thrill of rugged terrain with the beauty of remote landscapes. The summit provides panoramic views, including a unique perspective over the turquoise waters of Bunes Beach far below. The route involves navigating rocky slopes and exposed sections, making it a challenging hike best suited for those with experience in mountainous terrain.
Starting point: The journey begins with a ferry ride (book your ferry here: https://www.reisnordland.no/bestill-hurtigbat) from Reine to Vindstad. The new ferry service departs from the Reine Ytre havn, where parking is available for a fee (40 NOK/hr). Be sure to check the ferry schedule to plan your return trip. Once in Vindstad, the hike begins from the pier.
Route: From the pier, follow the gravel road through the village, passing colorful houses and heading toward the end of the fjord. As you approach the small cemetery, turn left onto a trail signposted to Bunes Beach. The path leads upward through grassy slopes before branching off towards a rocky field. As you ascend, the trail steepens and becomes more challenging, passing through a boulder field. After reaching a small saddle at around 400 meters, enjoy the spectacular views of Kjerkfjord before continuing along the ridge to the summit. The final stretch involves some moderate scrambling over narrow rocky sections with exposure, requiring caution. Once at the top, the views are truly rewarding, with vistas of both Kjerkfjord and Bunes Beach.
Difficulty according to Norwegian standards: Red = challenging; suitable for experienced hikers with good endurance and necessary hiking equipment.
