Matmora is a popular hiking trail in the Lofoten Islands that leads to an impressive summit at 788 meters above sea level. The hike offers a mix of varied terrain and includes everything one can discover in Lofoten: a small forest, views of the sea as well as surrounding lakes and peaks, mossy meadows, cloudberries, and sheep. The Matmora summit is part of a mountain range in the northeast of the island Austvågøya and offers spectacular views: on one side, the peaks of the mainland and on the other, the island group Vesterålen.
Starting point: Follow the FV888 from Straumnes towards Grunnfør, and on the right side (before the coastal road), there is a small parking lot hidden in the forest. Coordinates for Google Maps: 68.400919, 14.502054
Route: The trail first leads through a small forest and then up a very steep and washed-out path to the Delpen summit at 336 meters. Afterward, you follow the path over a grassy ridge. A steady ascent then begins, leading to the summit of Gjersvollheia. From here, the terrain becomes steeper and more eroded, requiring sure-footedness. Just before the summit, you must overcome some scree sections before reaching the stone summit cross. In clear weather, you have an incredible view—on one side, the high and pointed mountains of the mainland, and on the other, the Vesterålen islands are clearly visible.
