What makes this hike unique is its relatively under-the-radar status compared to many of the more famous mountain trails in the region. As a result, you’re unlikely to encounter many other hikers on your way up. While Smørdalskammen doesn’t demand the same level of physical effort as some of the tougher peaks nearby, it still provides a fulfilling experience. It’s an excellent option for those who want to immerse themselves in Lofoten’s stunning landscapes without the intense physical challenge. For hikers who value peaceful nature, stunning views, and the chance to explore lesser-known spots, Smørdalskammen is an excellent choice.

Starting point: Approximately 4.5 km from Leknes, there is a free parking lot for the Justinen hike, which also serves as the starting point for Smørdalskammen (Google Maps coordinates: 68.158048, 13.694570).

Route: The trail first leads uphill through a nearly fairy-tale-like birch forest, eventually reaching a grassy plateau that offers the first views towards Leknes and on the other side towards Storfjord. At times, the path becomes boggy, and you’ll need to find the best way through the muddy spots. Every now and then, you might encounter a solitary sheep standing calmly in the landscape, contentedly chewing on grass. In the distance, eagles can be seen circling in the sky. From the summit, there is a fantastic panoramic view of the mountain and fjord landscape. On clear days, you can even see the mainland in the distance.

Difficulty according to Norwegian standards: Blue = Suitable for moderately trained hikers with basic hiking knowledge and some experience in the terrain.

Distance: ≈ 8.5 km
Elevation gain: ≈ 370 meters up & down
Duration: ≈ 3 hours
