The hike to Munken is a must-experience adventure on the Lofoten Islands, combining stunning landscapes, a well-marked trail, and options for an overnight stay. The route is divided into two parts: the journey to Munkebu Hut and the climb to the Munken summit. Along the way, you’ll traverse varied terrain, from rocky ascents to tranquil lakes and boggy sections. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of dramatic fjords, shimmering lakes, and rugged peaks. For those who enjoy camping, the hike offers excellent spots near Munkebu Hut and below the summit, making it a popular choice for a peaceful night in nature.
Starting point: To start the hike, head to Sørvågen and turn right about 500 meters after passing through the village toward Å. Park in the paid lot located between Lake Sørvågvatnet and the school. The parking fees are 100 NOK for cars and 200 NOK for motorhomes from 8 am to 3 pm, and 50 NOK for cars and 250 NOK for motorhomes from 3 pm to 8 am. Payment is cash-only, so be sure to come prepared. Use these coordinates for the lot: 67.889834, 13.017908. From here, the well-marked trail begins, offering clear navigation to your destination.
Route: The hike to Munken begins near Lake Sørvågvatnet, with a steady ascent leading to Studalvatnet. The trail, well-marked and easy to follow, meanders along the lake’s shores before climbing steeply up a rocky hillside equipped with chains. This section can be slippery in wet conditions, but the chains provide ample support. Afterward, the trail levels out through a boggy area and continues past small ponds, offering incredible views of lakes, waterfalls, and distant peaks. The first leg concludes with a descent to Munkebu Hut, a popular halfway point for rest and camping. From there, the trail continues past a small lake, gradually ascending through a series of switchbacks. This section is less steep but offers increasingly stunning views as you climb higher. The path winds through rocky terrain and passes a few ponds before flattening briefly near the summit. The final stretch is straightforward, leading to a broad, rocky plateau with dramatic 360-degree views of fjords, peaks, and valleys. Take care near the eastern cliffs, especially in poor visibility.
For those planning to camp, Munkebu Hut is an excellent base with nearby water and plenty of tent spots. Alternatively, camping is possible about 100 meters below the summit near small ponds, though the ground is rocky and may require creativity with tent setup. The summit itself is less ideal for camping but possible for adventurous hikers with no water sources nearby. Whether as a day hike or an overnight adventure, the Munken route offers a perfect blend of challenge and reward in the heart of Lofoten’s wilderness.
