The Bernina Express is a breathtaking panoramic train journey that takes you from Chur/St. Moritz to Tirano, passing through stunning landscapes like glaciers and lakes. With 55 tunnels and 196 bridges along the way, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers an unforgettable experience. At 4 hours, it is a shorter alternative to the Glacier Express while passing by the same scenic landmarks such as the Lago Bianco and the Landwasser Viaduct. If you're feeling adventurous, you can extend your trip to Lugano on the Bernina Express Bus for even more scenic views!
If you are travelling in the direction from Chur to Tirano, make sure you are seated at the RIGHT side of the train. That way you’ll get the most spectacular views of the snow white glaciers when passing through the Ospizio Bernina. Conversely, sit on the left-side on the train when heading back from Tirano towards Chur.
General route options that I recommend:
Chur to Tirano, continue by bus to Lugano, overnight.Return back to Zurich the next day
Zurich to Lugano, Bernina Express bus to Tirano, train to Chur, overnight. Return back to Zurich the nezt day
If you are travelling with a pass that covers the cost of your base ticket (e.g. Eurail, Interrail, Swiss Travel Pass), then you won’t need to purchase a ticket, only the cost of the seat reservation.
