Mt Rigi has some of the most beautiful and exciting sledding routes near Lucerne. You ride a cogwheel mountain train to the peak with panorama views. Then sled down the mountain and take the train back as many times as you like.
TIP!!! The sledding day pass is included if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, GA, or SBB 1-Day Pass (e.g. Saver Day Pass). You only have to rent your sled. This is a great value for tourists that are traveling around Switzerland on the STP.
Rigi has a few sledding routes, ranging from 600m to 4 km. The main routes start at Rigi Kulm and end at Rigi Klösterli station, where you can catch the train back up the hill. See all sledding routes.
We like the Rigi Kulm-Schwändi-Rigi Klösterli route best (3.5km), with the best views. It's quite steep in parts, so be careful about controlling your speed.
When the kids were younger, we would sled together. But now my teens can sled on their own, while I snowshoe or winter hike and meet back up with them at lunchtime.
You can rent sleds at Rigi Kulm the top (300 sleds available, no reservations). You can drop them off at Rigi Klösterli when you are done.
At the Rigi Kulm rental center, sleds cost CHF 15/day + CHF 20/deposit. You can rent a helmet for CHF 5, recommended. They do not offer winter clothing rental.
