We love this gentle panorama hike at Fürenalp that traverses the mountain, leading to the stunning Stäuber waterfall. Then you follow the river down into the beautiful Engelberg valley, with many mountain peaks in view.

Trail: moderate • 3.5 h • 9.5 k loop • 10m up, 750m down
See trail map.

We particularly like the varied terrain on this trail: wide open alpine meadows, narrow rocky paths, lush forest, and rushing rivers. Unlike the nearby tourist attraction at Titlis, Fürenalp is mostly frequented by locals and much quieter.

Although it's a bit long, it's still a good choice for casual hikers and kids since because its either flat or downhill the whole time (unless you hike up!). If you have little kids, you can do a shorter loop at the top. Then return to the playground and restaurant at the top of the Fürenalp cable car.

Trail info

This trail starts at the top of the Fürenalp cable car and loops back down the mountain to the valley station.

We usually start with the cable car so the hike is mostly downhill. But if you want more of a challenge, you can hike up instead and end at the Fürenalp restaurant for refreshments before riding the cable car down to your starting point.

The trail is a narrow dirt path with uneven terrain, but not dangerous, suitable for kids and anyone who can go the distance. But if you prefer a shorter day, you could do the Grötziweg, a 3.4 km loop (90 mins) starting and ending at the restaurant & playground.

How to get there

This trail is at Fürenalp in the Engelberg valley, south of Lucerne. There is metered parking next to the cable car - Wasserfallstrasse, 6390 Engelberg (46°48'06.6"N 8°26'57.8"E)

By public transport: Take the train to Engelberg, then bus to Engelberg, Fürenalpbahn. The bus drops directly at the cable car station.

When to visit

The Fürenalp lift is one of the few cable cars that usually starts its summer season in late April, making it a good choice for spring hiking when other mountain transport is still closed.
