If you love secret spots, Lagoa do Congro is about to be your new favourite place in the Azores. This secluded crater lake on São Miguel Island is surrounded by thick, mossy forests and has an otherworldly green glow that makes it feel almost enchanted. Let’s dive into everything you need to know before visiting.

Located about 5.5 km from Vila Franca do Campo on this remote lagoon requires a hike to reach, but the breathtaking view and sense of solitude make it totally worth it.

‼️One thing you can’t do is swim. Swimming is not allowed to protect the lake’s fragile ecosystem, so enjoy the view from the shore.

The colour of the lake?

The lake’s striking green colour comes from a mix of algae, minerals, and the reflection of the dense forest surrounding it. On sunny days, it looks almost neon green. On cloudy days, it takes on a darker, mysterious shade. Either way, it’s stunning in any light.

🚗To get there, drive along the EN1-1A road, and once you see signs for Lagoa do Congro, take the gravel road leading to the parking area. The road gets bumpy, so a rental car with decent clearance is a good idea.

The Hike

From the parking area, you’ll take a short but scenic hike (about 15–20 minutes) down to the lake. The trail is mostly shaded, winding through a dense forest of Japanese cedars, ferns, and laurel trees.

Trail Details:

  • Distance: ~1 km (each way)

  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate (it’s downhill going in, so the return is a bit more challenging)

  • Terrain: Forest path with dirt, tree roots, and occasional mud

  • An easy hike but can get muddy and slippery, especially after rain.

As you near the bottom, the trees part just enough to reveal the deep emerald water, reflecting the forest around it. It’s a magical first glimpse.

When to visit?

The lake is beautiful year-round, but here’s what you should know:

  • Spring and summer (April–September) – Lush greenery, good weather, and ideal hiking conditions.

  • Fall (October–November) – Fewer tourists, stunning autumn colors, but the trail may be muddy.

  • Winter (December–March) – Cooler, wetter, and foggy, creating a moody, mystical vibe.

Best time of day?

  • Morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and fewer visitors.

Best Photo Spots

Lagoa do Congro is ridiculously photogenic.

  • Main viewpoint – Right when you reach the lake, you’ll get a full panoramic view.

  • Through the trees – Frame your shot with branches for a more dramatic effect.

  • Near the water’s edge – The reflections are clearest here, making for perfect mirror-like photos.

If you’re looking for a short, easy adventure that takes you off the beaten path, this lake is a must-see.
