Sightseeing
The Monte Palace Hotel, once a luxurious 5-star resort in the Azores, now sits abandoned on the edge of a dormant volcano. This massive concrete structure, hidden behind dense vegetation, sparks curiosity when passing by Miradouro da Vista do Rei.
Little history ..
Back in 1989, Monte Palace Hotel opened its doors, promising a high-end experience with unbeatable views of Sete Cidades. The location was perfect, right next to Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Azores. But there was one big problem: not enough tourists. The hotel struggled to fill its 88 rooms, two restaurants, and even a casino. After just 19 months, Monte Palace shut down, leaving behind a massive, empty building with million-dollar views but no guests to enjoy them.
What It’s Like Today 📸
Monte Palace has been sitting abandoned for over three decades. It’s eerie, a little mysterious, and completely fascinating. You will love it!
1. The View is Still Spectacular
Even though the hotel is falling apart, the reason it was built in the first place is still 100% worth seeing..the view. From here, you get an unreal panoramic look at Sete Cidades, with its twin lakes, lush green crater, and rolling hills. If there’s one thing Monte Palace got right, it’s location.
2. A Paradise for Urban Explorers
If you’re into abandoned places, Monte Palace is a dream. Walking through its empty halls feels like stepping into a post-apocalyptic movie. The old reception area, once polished and grand, is now covered in graffiti. The old rooms? Empty shells with open balconies looking over the crater.
3. Nature is Taking Over
Since closing, Monte Palace has been left completely untouched. The result? Moss, vines, and trees creeping through windows and doorways, slowly swallowing the building back into the landscape. It’s both haunting and beautiful.
Can You Still Visit Monte Palace Hotel?
For years, people could freely explore Monte Palace, in when I visited sep 2024 lots were freely exploring! I’m not sure if entry is still permitted . Even if you can’t , you can still enjoy the stunning views from the outside without stepping into the abandoned ruins.
There have been talks of Monte Palace being renovated and reopened, but for now, it remains one of the most famous abandoned hotels in the world.
Best Time to Visit 🌤️
Since you’re coming for the Sete Cidades viewpoint, aim for a clear morning or late afternoon when the light is best. The Azores weather can be unpredictable, and fog can roll in quickly, hiding the entire view—so check the forecast before heading up.
