If you're exploring São Miguel Island in the Azores, there’s a spot you absolutely have to check out—Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa. Now, I know you’ve probably seen your fair share of stunning viewpoints, but trust me, this one takes the cake. From here, you get one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of São Miguel, and the best part? It’s easily accessible, so you don’t have to hike for hours to enjoy it.
How to get there? 🗺️
Let’s talk logistics for a sec. The Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa is located on Pico da Barrosa, one of the highest points on the island. It’s an easy drive from Ponta Delgada, about 30 minutes or so, and it’s right off the main road. You’ll find a small parking area where you can pull over, hop out, and take in the view. No need for a long hike or crazy mountain climbs—just pure, unspoiled beauty. How perfect is that?
What makes it special?😍
Alright, let’s talk about why you’ll want to stop here. The views from Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa are absolutely stunning. From this viewpoint, you’re looking at Lagoa do Fogo. Seriously, the contrast between the deep blue water and the emerald slopes of the crater is something out of a postcard. If you turn around and look in the opposite direction, you get a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean. On a clear day, the view is beyond words.
Go early in the morning when the clouds are still low and the sky is clear.
Late afternoon also works well for a softer, golden light and fewer crowds.
Pro tip: You can always check out the Lagoa do Fogo webcams before heading up to get a sense of the weather. This will save you from making the trek only to be met with thick fog (trust me, it happens!).
