Waterfall
If you’re a fan of waterfalls and hiking, Cascata do Salto do Prego in São Miguel, Azores, should be at the top of your list. This stunning waterfall offers both natural beauty and adventure, and it's one of those spots that’ll leave you feeling like you’ve found a hidden treasure. Let’s dive into why this waterfall should be a must-see on your Azores itinerary.
Info:
The waterfall, with its impressive 20-metre drop, crashes into a beautiful natural pool, surrounded by lush greenery. It’s peaceful, tranquil, and feels like a slice of paradise. The hike to the waterfall takes you through dense forests, past streams, and through an area of São Miguel that feels more wild and untouched.
The trail 🥾
The trailhead for Cascata do Salto do Prego starts near the village of Faial da Terra, on the east side of São Miguel. From Ponta Delgada, it’s about a 40-minute drive. Once you reach the village, park your car and get ready for the hike.
The trail is about 2.5 km long and takes around 45 minutes to an hour to reach the waterfall. It’s a relatively easy hike, but be prepared for some muddy paths and occasional uphill climbs. The whole experience feels like you’re walking through a tropical jungle.
When to visit:
The best time to visit is during the spring and summer months (May to September), when the weather is typically warmer, and the trail is in its best condition. During the rainy season (November to March), the trail can become quite slippery, and the waterfall’s water volume may increase, making it harder to access the pool. If you want to avoid the crowds and have the place almost to yourself, early morning or late afternoon is the best time to visit. Most people tend to go during the midday hours, so you'll get a quieter, more peaceful experience during off-peak times.
No facilities: There are no toilets or food trucks near the waterfall, so plan accordingly. Bring snacks and water with you.
