Miradouro da Boca do Inferno: The Azores’ Most Epic View
If you're heading to São Miguel in the Azores and want to see a view that will make you question if you're still on Earth, Miradouro da Boca do Inferno is the place to go. This lookout point is hands-down one of the most breathtaking spots on the island. It’s got dramatic cliffs, lush green hills, and a view that stretches over Sete Cidades’ twin lakes like something straight out of a dream.
How to Get There 🗺️
Miradouro da Boca do Inferno is located within Sete Cidades, one of the most stunning volcanic craters in the Azores. If you’re driving, pop Lagoa do Canário into Google Maps—this will take you to the closest parking area.
Here’s what you need to know
The entrance to the trail is near Lagoa do Canário, just off the EN9-1A road. Look for a gate with a dirt road leading into the forest.
There’s a small parking lot, but it fills up quickly, especially in peak season. If it’s full, you may need to park along the roadside.
The trail starts right past the gate and is only about a 10–15 minute walk to the viewpoint.
If you don’t have a car, a guided tour is a great option. Many tours from Ponta Delgada include Boca do Inferno along with other must-see spots in Sete Cidades.
The Hike: Short, Sweet, and Scenic
This is one of the easiest hikes you’ll do for such an incredible reward. The walk is mostly flat, with a gentle incline towards the end. It’s a well-trodden dirt path, and unless it’s been raining heavily, it’s not too muddy.
Distance: 800 metres (0.5 miles) each way
Time: 10–15 minutes to the viewpoint
Difficulty: Easy (suitable for all ages)
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Along the way, you’ll pass through a peaceful forest before the landscape opens up to rolling green hills. Then, just as you think you’ve seen it all, you reach the viewpoint—and it’s pure magic.
Best Photo Spots 📸
If you’re here for the views (let’s be honest, who isn’t?), there are a few key spots to snap the perfect shot:
The Classic Boca do Inferno Shot:
Once you reach the viewpoint, you’ll see a dirt trail curving along the ridge with the lakes in the background. This is the iconic shot.
For the best framing, stand slightly back to capture both the trail and the lakes.
The Overlook Bench
Just before you hit the main viewpoint, there’s a small wooden bench with a panoramic view of the crater. It’s a great spot for a quieter, less crowded shot.
The Edge of the Trail
If you walk a little further along the ridge, you’ll find a few different angles of the lakes. These shots highlight the contrast between the blue and green waters.
Best Time to Visit
Timing is everything at Miradouro da Boca do Inferno. The weather in the Azores is unpredictable, and clouds can roll in fast.
Early morning or late afternoon – Fewer crowds, softer lighting, and a better chance of catching the lakes at their most vibrant.
Midday – Bright and clear but can get busy with tour groups.
Cloudy days? – If it’s foggy, wait it out! Weather changes quickly, and sometimes, just waiting 20–30 minutes can make a huge difference.
Final Tips
Wear comfy shoes. The trail is short but can get muddy after rain.
Respect the landscape. Stay on marked trails and take only photos, leave only footprints.
Is It Worth It?
A million times yes. Miradouro da Boca do Inferno is easily one of the best viewpoints in the Azores. It’s quick, easy to reach, and offers a view that looks straight out of a fantasy movie. If you’re exploring São Miguel, make sure this spot is at the top of your list.
