Tattoo-friendly onsen offering stunning views of the city and Mt. Fuji. I always visit during sunset but I hear sunrise is beautiful too. An outdoor food venue is available such including coffee and snacks and even ramen, and they sell custom-designed hand and bath towels.
Two Panoramic Baths
Aka-furo (Sunrise Bath): Known for its early hours, this bath offers fantastic views of Mt. Fuji, especially during the sunrise. The water here is a bit warmer and is recommended for those who want a more intense hot spring experience.
Kocchi-no-yu (This Side Bath): Slightly cooler, this bath also has views of Mt. Fuji but is geared more towards those who prefer a more relaxed temperature. Both baths overlook the same beautiful valley but offer slightly different perspectives and atmospheres.
Access and Hours
Access by Car: About a 30-minute drive from JR Yamanashi Station. Free parking is available on-site.
Access by Public Transport: Take a taxi from Yamanashi Station (approximately 15 minutes) as public transportation options are limited directly to the onsen.
Opening Hours and Best Time to Visit
Hours: Hottarakashi Onsen opens before sunrise, allowing visitors to soak in the hot springs while watching the sunrise. It stays open until late evening, providing a chance to enjoy a sunset view as well.
Sunrise Bath: The “Aka-furo” (Sunrise Bath) is particularly popular, so arriving early is recommended to secure a spot and witness the breathtaking sunrise over Mt. Fuji and the Kofu Basin.
