Tatamidaira is accessible from both Gifu as well as from Nagano. It is located at an elevation of approximately 2,700 meters, serves as the primary gateway for hikers aiming to summit Mount Norikura. Accessing this high-altitude trailhead requires the use of public transportation, as private vehicles are restricted to preserve the natural environment.

Accessing Tatamidaira:

  1. From Tokyo:

    • By Train and Bus:

      • Train: Take the JR Chuo Line Limited Express "Azusa" from Shinjuku Station to Matsumoto Station (approximately 2.5 to 3 hours).

      • Bus: From Matsumoto Station, transfer to the Alpico Kotsu bus bound for Norikura Kogen. Disembark at the Norikura Kogen Tourist Information Center (approximately 1 hour).

      • Shuttle Bus: At the Norikura Kogen Tourist Information Center, board the shuttle bus to Tatamidaira (approximately 50 minutes).

  2. From Nagoya:

    • By Train and Bus:

      • Train: Take the JR Chuo Line Limited Express "Shinano" to Matsumoto Station (approximately 2 hours).

      • Bus and Shuttle Bus: Follow the same bus and shuttle bus route as described above from Matsumoto Station.

  3. From Takayama:

    • By Bus:

      • Bus to Hirayu Onsen: From Takayama Nohi Bus Center, take a bus to Hirayu Onsen (approximately 1 hour).

      • Shuttle Bus: Transfer to the shuttle bus from Hirayu Onsen to Tatamidaira (approximately 1 hour).

Important Notes:

  • Seasonal Operation: The shuttle buses to Tatamidaira typically operate from July 1 to October 31. Service is suspended from November 1 to June 30 due to snow conditions.

  • Advance Reservations: While some bus routes allow for on-the-spot ticket purchases, it's advisable to check schedules and consider making reservations, especially during peak seasons.

  • Direct Express Buses: Currently, there are no direct express buses from major city centers like Tokyo or Nagoya to Tatamidaira. Travelers must transfer through Matsumoto or Takayama as outlined above.

  • Private Vehicles: Access to Tatamidaira by private car is restricted. Visitors must use designated shuttle buses from specified points such as Norikura Kogen or Hirayu Onsen.
