Mt. Tsurumi is one of the most accessible and rewarding hikes near Beppu, perfect for beginners and those seeking stunning views without too much effort. You can choose to either hike up from the base or take the ropeway for a more leisurely experience, making it ideal for all fitness levels. Whichever route you choose, the panoramic views at the top are incredible, especially on clear days where you can see all the way to the surrounding mountains and even the sea.

General Information & Summary:

Mt. Tsurumi, standing at 1,375 meters, offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Beppu Bay, Kuju Mountains, and beyond. Starting from the Tsurumi Ropeway Base Station, you have the choice of either hiking up the entire way or taking the scenic ropeway, which shortens the hike significantly.

For those who enjoy a more traditional hiking experience, the trail up from the base provides a mix of forested paths, volcanic landscapes, and several scenic viewpoints along the way. The trail is well-maintained but can get steep, especially near the top, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Along the way, you'll pass through peaceful forests and eventually emerge into more open areas, where you’ll catch glimpses of the surrounding mountains and coastline.
