The Yamanami Highway Observatory is a 14km stretch along the "Rooftop of Kyushu" very popular among Japanese cyclists.

This is a good place to see expansive views of the Kuju mountain range. The Aso Gogaku Five Peaks can be seen in the distance spouting volcanic steam.

It offers killer views of the Kuju mountain range and Tadewara Marsh. From Chojabaru, you can check out Mount Io steaming away in the distance. I always stop by Makinoto Pass, the highest point on the highway, where you can soak in the scenery and maybe catch a glimpse of those bright pink Kyushu azaleas in June.
