Hirizo Beach is a hidden gem located in Minami-Izu, accessible only by boat.
Accessibility:
To reach Hirizo Beach, you first need to travel to Nakagi Port, where you’ll take a 5-minute ferry to the beach. The ferry operates from July to September and costs around 2,000 yen and runs approximately every 5–10 minutes during the day, depending on demand and weather conditions.
By Public Transport: From Izukyu-Shimoda Station, take a bus to Nakagi Port, which takes about 40 minutes. From there, you can hop on the ferry to Hirizo Beach.
By Car: You can park near Nakagi Port for around 1,000-2,000 yen per day, but be aware that the area can get crowded during peak season.
Season & Best Time to Visit:
Hirizo Beach is open for visitors from July to September, and it’s especially popular during the summer months. However, July through mid-August tends to be the busiest time, so visiting in early July or September can provide a more peaceful experience. Be sure to check the weather conditions, as the ferry service can be suspended on rough sea days.
Facilities:
Hirizo Beach is a natural beach with no on-site facilities like restrooms or restaurants, so it's important to come prepared. However, there are small shops and rental services for snorkeling gear near Nakagi Port. Bringing your own food and water is recommended, and remember to take all your trash with you.
Rentals & Activities:
Snorkeling is the most popular activity at Hirizo Beach, and you can rent snorkeling gear at Nakagi Port. You can also rent umbrellas or other beach essentials before heading to the beach. The underwater visibility is exceptional, allowing you to see various tropical fish and coral formations.
Important Tips:
No reservations for the ferry, so plan to arrive early, especially during peak season.
No BBQs or pets allowed on the beach, and be mindful of local regulations regarding marine life conservation.
Consider staying at a nearby minshuku (guesthouse) for easy early-morning access to the ferry.
