Day 1: Hike to Akadake Kōsen Mountain Accommodation

  • Distance: Approx. 5 km (to Akadake Kōsen)

  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours

  • Incline: Moderate ascent

  • Trail Description: From Minotoguchi, the hike starts through a forested trail, with gentle inclines. The path follows along a mountain stream, creating a peaceful atmosphere as you gradually ascend. You’ll reach Akadake Kōsen in about 3-4 hours, where you can enjoy a warm meal and relax for the night.

Accommodation at Akadake Kōsen:

Facilities: Akadake Kōsen is one of the most popular mountain huts in the Yatsugatake range. It offers cozy dormitory-style rooms, hot meals, and even an onsen bath (hot spring), a rarity in mountain huts.

  • Reservations: You’ll need to book your stay in advance, especially during peak seasons (summer and autumn). You can check their website or contact them directly for availability.

Day 2: Summit Mt. Akadake and Descend

  • Distance: Approx. 8 km (round trip from Akadake Kōsen to Akadake summit and back to Minotoguchi)

  • Duration: 7 to 8 hours

  • Incline: Steep ascent to the summit

Summit Ascent

The climb to the summit of Mt. Akadake from Akadake Kōsen is more demanding, involving steep ascents and some scrambling near the top. You’ll pass through Gyoja Col (行者小屋), where the trail becomes noticeably steeper. The last section involves chains and ladders, making it a thrilling but challenging climb. The summit rewards you with incredible views of the Japanese Alps, Mt. Fuji, and the surrounding peaks of the Yatsugatake range.

Descent

After enjoying the views at the summit, you can retrace your steps back down to Akadake Kōsen and then to Minotoguchi. Be mindful of the steep descent, especially around the chain sections.

Best Time to Visit: The best seasons to hike Mt. Akadake are during summer and autumn. Winter hikes require winter climbing experience and equipment.
