I’ve hiked Mt. Kinpu a few times, and it’s one of my favorites for its manageable slope and steady elevation gain. The trail is long but fair, with a nice, gradual climb. Near the summit, it gets rocky, and the views open up spectacularly. I recommend bringing a bento to enjoy on the rocks—it’s the perfect lunch spot with a view! The Torii gate at the top, surrounded by massive boulders, adds a touch of magic.

Trailhead:

  • Start Point: Odarumi-toge

  • Trail on YAMAP: Mt. Kinpu via Odarumi-toge Trail

Accessibility & How to Get to the Trailhead:

  • By Car:
Drive to the Odarumi-toge Pass parking lot. Be sure to check for seasonal road closures, as access is only available between mid-May and mid-November due to winter weather conditions. The road typically closes from late November until early May.

  • By Public Transport:
Public transport is limited, as Odarumi-toge Pass is mainly accessible by car. If using public transport, take the JR Chuo Line to Enzan Station, and from there, consider renting a car or using a taxi to reach the trailhead.

Hike Details:

  • Distance: Approx. 8 km (round trip)

  • Duration: 5 hours (round trip)

  • Elevation Gain: About 500 meters

General Information & Summary:

Starting from Odarumi-toge, the trail to Mt. Kinpu offers hikers an incredible experience through lush forests and rocky ridges. The first part of the trail is forested, with cedar and pine trees lining the path. As you ascend, the scenery opens up, revealing the striking granite formations that Mt. Kinpu is famous for. You’ll reach the summit of Mt. Kinpu in about 2.5 to 3 hours, where panoramic views await.

The highlight of this hike is the summit area, where giant granite boulders provide ideal spots for resting and admiring the 360-degree view of Mt. Fuji, the Yatsugatake Mountains, and the Japanese Alps. This hike is ideal for autumn, as the fall foliage enhances the landscape, although each season brings its unique beauty.

To return, follow the same path back to Odarumi-toge. This route is best attempted during the open season from mid-May to mid-November, as snow and ice make the trail and access roads unsafe outside these months.
