While the hike itself is not that much fun, the view of the lake is beautiful.

Highlights Along the Trail

  • Lake Ono (Onuma): The trail starts by winding along Lake Ono, a serene crater lake at the base of Mt. Akagi. The lake’s surroundings are especially beautiful during autumn when the foliage transforms into vibrant colors. Take in the reflective, peaceful scenery as you start your ascent.

  • Akagi Shrine: Located on the shores of Lake Ono, Akagi Shrine is a spiritual and cultural landmark revered for centuries. The shrine, dedicated to the deity of Mt. Akagi, is known for its striking red torii gates and tranquil setting on the lake’s edge. Many hikers stop here for a moment of reflection and to enjoy the historic atmosphere.

  • Summit Views: After ascending through lush forests, you’ll reach the summit of Kurobi-dake. The panoramic views here, especially on a clear day, stretch across the Kanto Plain and surrounding mountains, offering a rewarding sight for the effort of the climb.

Accessibility & How to Get to the Trailhead:

  • By Car: Drive to the Akagi Visitor Center parking area.

  • By Public Transport:

    • From Tokyo, take the JR Joetsu or Hokuriku Shinkansen to Takasaki Station, then transfer to the JR Ryomo Line and alight at Maebashi Station. From Maebashi, take a bus to Akagi Visitor Center (buses run seasonally, so check the schedule in advance).

Hike Details:

  • Distance: Approx. 6 km (round trip)

  • Duration: 4 hours

  • Incline: Around 600 meters

General Information & Summary:
Standing at approximately 1,828 meters, Mt. Akagi is one of the “Three Famous Mountains of Gunma” and offers scenic vistas across the Kanto Plain, Lake Ono, and the surrounding forest. This well-rounded hike from the Akagi Visitor Center provides not only a chance to summit Kurobi-dake, the highest peak, but also features cultural and scenic highlights along the way.
