This is my favorite hike in Mie Prefecture.

Binshiyama is a rewarding yet moderately challenging hike located on the famous Kumano Kodo Iseji pilgrimage route in Mie Prefecture. This hike is perfect for those looking to explore Japan’s ancient pilgrimage trails while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding nature, including forests, mountains, and the coastline. The summit of Binshiyama, with its famous "Zou no Se" (Back of the Elephant) rock, offers stunning panoramic views of Owase City and the Pacific Ocean.

Trailhead:

The trail begins at Tanemaki Gonbe on Sato
Alternatively, you can stay at Camp Inn Miyama and hike from there which is what I did.

(Trail on YAMAP)

Accessibility & How to Get to the Trailhead:

By Car:
Drive and park at the trailhead.

By Public Transport:
Take a bus from Owase Station to Washige, then walk about 10 minutes to reach Michi no Eki Miyama. The trailhead is a short walk from the bus stop.

Accommodation:

  • Camp Inn Miyama: Best for a nature loving group or families who want to stay together and enjoy fireworks and BBQ.

  • Owase Seaside View Hotel: A comfortable option close to the coast, offering easy access to the trail and beautiful sea views.

  • Minshuku Magoseya: A traditional Japanese inn located near the Magose Pass, perfect for those wanting to experience local hospitality before their hike.

Hike Details:

  • Distance: Approx. 6 km (round trip)

  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours

  • Incline: 599 meters

  • Difficulty: Relatively Easy

General Information & Summary:

Binshiyama, standing at 599 meters, is a key part of the Kumano Kodo Iseji route, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The trail to the summit passes through beautiful forests and offers hikers the chance to visit historic landmarks, such as the Yonaki-Jizou statue, which is believed to protect children and travelers. The hike’s highlight is reaching the Zou no Se rock formation, where visitors can take in breathtaking views of the Pacific coastline and nearby towns.

The hike typically takes around 3 to 4 hours round-trip, and the well-maintained path makes it suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers. Don’t forget to bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities at the summit.
