Trailhead: Kosen Karasawa Yatsugatake Secret Hot Spring

Hike Details:

  • Distance: Approx. 9 km (round trip)

  • Duration: 5 to 6 hours

  • Incline: 900 meters of elevation gain

  • Difficulty: Moderate, with some steep and rocky sections near the summit.

The Route:

  1. From Kosen to Mt. Tengu
The hike begins at Karasawa Kosen, where you'll follow a well-marked trail that winds through lush alpine forests. The initial section is relatively gentle, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. As you ascend, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged, especially as you approach the Gyoja Col (行者小屋), a small rest area before the final ascent.

  2. Summiting East and West Tengu
After reaching the col, the path splits to take you to either East Tengu (東天狗岳) or West Tengu (西天狗岳). East Tengu is the higher and rockier of the two, offering panoramic views of the Southern Alps, Mt. Fuji, and beyond. West Tengu has a broader summit and is slightly easier to climb, though both peaks are worth visiting if time allows.

  3. Return to Kosen
After enjoying the views and a well-deserved break at the summit, you’ll descend the same way, carefully navigating the steep sections near the summit. Once you arrive back at Kosen Karasawa, you can soak in the hot spring, which is an excellent way to rejuvenate after a challenging day on the mountain.

Accommodation at Kosen Karasawa Yatsugatake Secret Hot Spring:

The lodge at Kosen Karasawa offers a cozy atmosphere and simple, dormitory-style rooms, perfect for hikers. The highlight is the onsen (hot spring), which is open-air and nestled in the beautiful alpine surroundings. Staying here allows you to enjoy the peacefulness of the mountains and recharge before or after your hike.

Highlights:

  • Spectacular Summit Views: From both East and West Tengu, you can see far-reaching views of Mt. Fuji, the Southern Alps, and the Yatsugatake range.

  • Autumn Foliage: If you're hiking in fall, the surrounding forests offer stunning colors, making this hike particularly beautiful in autumn.
