Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the most revered Shinto shrines in Japan, located in the mountainous region of the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture. As part of the Kumano Sanzan, along with Kumano Nachi Taisha and Kumano Hayatama Taisha, it forms a key part of the ancient Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The shrine is dedicated to several deities, including the sun goddess Amaterasu. Visitors can experience the serene, spiritual atmosphere of the forested surroundings, which have attracted pilgrims for over 1,000 years. The iconic Otorii Gate, one of the largest in Japan, marks the entrance to the sacred area of Kumano Hongu Taisha and stands as a symbol of the divine.

The shrine is also famous for its Yatagarasu, a mythical three-legged crow, considered a divine guide. Visitors can explore the nearby hot springs, such as Yunomine Onsen, after completing the pilgrimage.

Kumano Hongu Taisha hosts several annual festivals, including the Kumano Hongu Taisha Spring Festival, where locals and visitors can witness traditional rituals and ceremonies.
