If you've seen sunrise or sunset pictures of the Zermatt village with the Matterhorn in the background, they were probably taking from this iconic photo spot.

How to get there

It's about a 15 min walk from the train station, through the village and up the hill on some stairs. The closest address is Mürini 24, 3920 Zermatt. It's free to visit and open anytime since it doesn't require a gondola ride.

It's not a secret, though some gatekeeping influencers pretend it is. It's marked right on Google Maps, labeled "Zermatt Matterhorn Viewpoint."

The spot itself it not particularly nice, just on the side of the road. Last time I was there, it was all under construction. But it's free and absolutely spectacular, with the entire Zermatt village in the frame and Matterhorn smiling down on the happy travelers.

When to go for the best pics

Obviously, sunrise and sunset are the best times. Check the times on Google and arrive about 30 mins beforehand to set up your equipment and patiently wait for the magic moment. I took about 100 photos over 15 mins as the sun lit up the peak.

I went in April during our long Easter ski weekend. It was freezing cold! I went about 30 mins before sunrise so I could capture the pink light as it moved across the Matterhorn. I expected this spot to be full of photographers but no one else showed up. Probably not the case in summer.

Also, please don't walk on anyone's property, like a private balcony. Be cool.
