I’ve hiked the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route multiple times and the best part is always the Murodo Plateau. You can enter Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route from the Nagano side, hike trails near Murodo Plateau then exit on the Toyama side. It’s a bit pricey to take every ride along the route, so if you want to save, skip some of the bus or trolley sections and hike instead—trails are generally well-maintained and give you even more time to absorb the breathtaking landscapes.

Staying two nights at or above Murodo is my top tip. You’ll get to enjoy the sunset and sunrise and have time to explore nearby trails, like the beautiful Mikurigaike Pond or Mt. Tate, or hike to top destinations like Tsurugi or Goshikigahara.

Seasonal Opening

The route is open from mid-April to the end of November, with specific highlights in each season:

  • Spring (April–June): Famous for the snow corridor, where snow walls up to 20 meters high line the path.

  • Summer (July–September): A lush, green season offering wildflowers, perfect for exploring hiking trails in the Murodo Plateau. Best season for hiking the peaks.

  • Autumn (October–November): Known for its spectacular foliage, especially around Kurobe Gorge.

Access From Nagano (Ogizawa Station):

  1. Start at Ogizawa Station (accessible by bus from JR Shinano-Omachi Station).

  2. Take the Kanden Tunnel Trolleybus to reach Kurobe Dam.

  3. Continue via cable cars and buses to Murodo Plateau.

Access From Toyama (Tateyama Station):

  1. Start at Tateyama Station (reachable from JR Toyama Station via train or bus).

  2. Board the Tateyama Cable Car to Bijodaira, then proceed via buses and ropeways past Kurobe Dam.

  3. Reach Murodo Plateau after scenic stops along the way.

Top Peaks from Murodo

Murodo offers access to some of Japan's most beautiful alpine peaks. For those looking to explore beyond the main trails, Goshikigahara is a highlight:

  1. Mt. Tateyama (Oyama, 3,015m)
A must-hike, this peak takes you to Oyama Shrine, offering sweeping views after a moderate 2-3 hour ascent.

  2. Mt. Tsurugi (2,999m)
For experienced climbers, Tsurugi’s rugged path includes chains and steep scrambles, but rewards with breathtaking alpine views.

  3. Goshikigahara Plateau (2,500m)
A hidden gem, Goshikigahara is known for its unique landscapes and rich flora. This day hike offers trails to bubbling ponds, volcanic rock formations, and vistas over Murodo's surroundings. It’s less crowded and highly scenic, making it perfect for nature photography.
