Hot Spring
Hot Spring
All ages
This hot spring is up in the forest - just a short walk from the parking area. It offers great views of Mount Myoko and is a great place to visit for sunset. This hot spring is one of the less common style onsen in Japan where you are in more of "wild" place as there are no real facilities beyond a changing area where you store your clothes. However, it is maintained by the local community as it draws tourists to the area to spend money. While it is free, there is a donation box that I always drop a few coins in when I visit to help pay for upkeep.
This hot spring is not necessarily "off-limits" during the winter however, the water temperature will change and become colder as snow melts into the water. It will also be dirtier as the water flow will slow down. I wouldn't recommend the winter for this reason but if you decide to venture out there remember to take a shovel to dig out the snow!
Important stuff: Tattoo friendly. Completely naked. Men and women are separate. No fresh water here; you need to scoop water from the hot spring bath using a bucket and pour the water over you to rinse your body before entering the hot spring.
Tip: bring a few coins to donate to the locals for hot spring maintenance. It's nice to go here at night for sunset or morning for sunrise.
