I visited back in April 2021 and couldn't believe my eyes just how beautiful the cherry blossoms were.

Oshino Hakkai, located in the charming village of Oshino between Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka, is a traditional Japanese site consisting of eight crystal-clear ponds fed by underground springs from Mt. Fuji. Known for its stunning reflections of Mt. Fuji, this picturesque spot is cherished for its pristine waters, traditional architecture, and scenic beauty. A visit to Oshino Hakkai is a peaceful journey into Japan’s natural and cultural heritage, offering beautiful views, delicious local foods, and a serene environment.

Getting There:

  • By Train and Bus: From Tokyo, take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station, then transfer to the Fujikyu Railway to Fujisan Station. From there, take a 20-minute bus ride to Oshino Hakkai.

  • By Car: About a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from central Tokyo with parking available in nearby lots.

What to Expect:

  1. The Eight Ponds: The main attraction at Oshino Hakkai is the eight ponds, each with its own history and character. The ponds are fed by Mt. Fuji’s snowmelt, which filters through layers of volcanic rock over several decades, resulting in incredibly clear water.

  2. Traditional Architecture and Culture: The area is lined with quaint thatched-roof buildings, traditional shops, and small shrines, creating a nostalgic ambiance. You’ll find stores selling handcrafted goods, souvenirs, and local produce.

  3. Local Cuisine: Try fresh wasabi, soba noodles, and yuba (tofu skin) dishes from nearby restaurants and food stalls. You can also find unique Fuji-themed treats and fresh spring water you can drink directly from fountains.

  4. Seasonal Highlights:

    • Spring: Enjoy cherry blossoms blooming around the ponds, creating a colorful contrast against the clear blue water.

    • Autumn: The vibrant fall foliage makes for a stunning backdrop, especially with Mt. Fuji in view.

    • Winter: Clear skies offer the best views of snow-capped Mt. Fuji, reflecting beautifully in the ponds.
