Witness some of the country's most stunning geological formation by explore one of the largest lava caves in Iceland.
Located in the Hallmundarhraun lava field, Víðgelmir Cave is a massive underground system that stretches for over a kilometer. The cave was formed over 1,000 years ago during a volcanic eruption and is filled with stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and other geological formations that have been shaped by the natural forces of the earth.
You can explore the cave by taking a guided tour, which is led by experienced guides who are knowledgeable about the cave's history and geology. The tour takes you deep into the cave, where you can witness the awe-inspiring beauty of the geological formations and learn about the cave's history and significance.
One of the highlights of the tour is the chance to see the stunning ice formations that are found within the cave. These formations are formed by ice that has melted from the surface and dripped down into the cave, creating a magical and otherworldly atmosphere.
Fun folklore - The lava field Hallmundarhraun is named after the troll Hallmundur, who is mentioned in Grettis saga, one of the Icelandic sagas. In the saga, Hallmundur helps the main hero Grettir, and then offers him to stay with him and his daughter.
