Jōnan-gū Shrine, located in Fushimi district of southern Kyoto, is a Shinto shrine with an impressive history. Founded in 794 to protect the city, it has since become a hub of culture and modern life, playing host to multiple traditional festivals throughout the year. Its garden, Rakusuien, blooms with colorful and fragrant flowers each season, from cherry blossoms in spring to Japanese gentian in autumn. The shrine is also nearby various other historical sites like Gokonomiya-jinja, Fushimi Castle and Tofuku-ji, making for an all-encompassing educational and fun experience. Jōnan-gū Shrine is an absolute must-see for anyone looking to learn more about Japan's culture and its history.
