Mount Kurama, situated in Kyoto in the Kansai region of Japan, is known for its fascinating history and mystical atmosphere. Reiki, a holistic healing art, was born on Mount Kurama in the early 1900s and is still practiced today. It is said that tengu - mythical creatures from Japanese folklore - lurk around the mountain. They are seen as protectors of the natural world. Want to experience some of the region's culture? Visit the majestic Kuramadera Temple atop the mountain and learn about its esoteric origins. Those who want to do it the old fashioned way can take the Kurama-Kibune hike over the mountain to the opposite side, or ride the cable car up for a fantastic view. In Kibune you can eat traditional food atop wooden platforms called kawadoko which stretch across the river. Enjoy your journey!
