Gion, located in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto, is a traditional old-townscape that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its plethora of temples, shrines and craft shops, it is the beating heart of Japan's historical culture. The iconic Ginkakuji Temple, also known as the Silver Pavilion, offers visitors the chance to witness the beautiful moss and Autumn foliage gardens, while the Philosopher's Path connects a number of other impressive shrines and temples. In the Gion district, weary travelers can experience a taste of Japanese hospitality with high-end restaurants and bars, or immerse themselves in geisha culture by visiting ochaya and Kaburenjo theatre. Visitors to Gion should be sure to stroll through Kiyomizu area for a chance to purchase local pl abeautiful ceramics and other crafts. With so much to explore, Gion is an ideal destination for experiencing the best of traditional Japan.

July is the most important month for Gion, as the most famous festival, Gion Matsuri, takes place.
