Enryaku-ji Temple, located on top of Mt. Hiei along the border of Kyoto and Shiga prefectures, is a powerful temple with a deep impact on Japanese Buddhism. Built by Saicho, a renowned monk and founder of the Tendai sect, Enryaku-ji has been the source of many Buddhist sects throughout history. Not only was it wealthy and influential, but its monks even had their own army which faced off against the infamous warlord Oda Nobunaga. Visitors to this historic site can take one of two routes up: the Eizan Cablecar and Ropeway from Kyoto City or the Sakamoto Cablecar from Otsu City, both offering stunning views of the area. There are four main areas within the temple grounds for visitors to explore, each with its own unique atmosphere and traditions. Whether taking in the somberness of Saito or stopping at the ancient Hiyoshi Shrine of Sakamoto, visitors to Enryaku-ji are sure to have an unforgettable experience.
