The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, also known as the Atomic Bomb Dome or A-Bomb Dome, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Hiroshima, Japan. This historic monument stands as an iconic reminder of the destructive power of nuclear weapons, having been the only structure to remain standing near the impact site after being devastated by the atomic bomb attack of 1945. It is now preserved in its ruined state as a continual reminder of the consequences of war. The Genbaku Dome also serves as a poignant symbol of peace, and continues to be the primary landmark of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. International politicians often visit the memorial, with Barack Obama becoming the first sitting U.S. President to do so in 2016. Every year, the municipal government of Hiroshima holds an annual Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony at the site.
