This beautiful bright blue reservoir is high in the mountains southeast of Interlaken.
To get here, you ride the Gelmerbahn, a steep open-air funicular train called the Gelmerbahn. Videos on social media often show it as a fast roller coaster ride, but it actually moves quite slowly.
From the top of the funicular, it's less than 5 mins to reach the lake. If you aren't hiking, you can walk on the easy path to the dam and enjoy fantastic views of the lake and mountains without much effort.
We’ve visited the Gelmersee many times over the years, making treasured memories with our family and friends. We usually do the short hike around the lake, then settle in for a picnic, and pick wild blueberries.
How to get there
The trail is reached by the Gelmerbahn funicular. You must book tickets in advance, choosing a specific up and down time. More info about tickets on SwissFamilyFun.com
By car: There is parking next to the funicular station (See on map). The closest address is Hotel Handeck, Grimselstrasse 19, 3864 Guttannen, which is just past the Gelmerbahn. About 50 min drive from Interlaken.
By public transport: The closest bus stop is Handegg, Gelmerbahn but the bus only goes twice a day. Check schedule on SBB.ch. About 1h30 from Interlaken.
What to do
If you aren't hiking, we suggest a short walk to the dam, which gives lovely views across the lake. There's a little sandy area where you can picnic. Swimming near the dam is not allowed due to waterworks.
If you like to hike, you can do a loop around the lake, about 2 hours. It's a rocky trail with steep slopes on the side. So not for beginners, small children or those afraid of heights. See trail info.
