The Dunas de Porto Santo are a series of sand dunes that form a unique part of the island’s natural landscape. These dunes host a rare ecosystem with endemic plant and animal species, offering a glimpse into the island’s distinct biodiversity. The area is also known for its peaceful atmosphere and picturesque views, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Visiting the dunes is particularly interesting if you’ve traveled to Porto Santo from Madeira. The stark contrast between the two islands is remarkable—Porto Santo’s arid, sandy landscape feels much closer to Africa, while Madeira’s lush greenery offers no sense of its proximity to the African continent.

That said, I wouldn’t consider the dunes a must-see attraction unless you’re curious about this contrast. If you’ve experienced the grandeur of the Sahara Desert, these dunes are far from comparable in scale or appearance. However, for a short stroll or a quiet moment in nature, they are worth exploring during your time on the island.
