Miradouro do Pico Branco, located on Porto Santo, is a stunning viewpoint at 450 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged landscapes of the island. Its name, meaning “White Peak,” is likely inspired by the light-colored rocks and unique vegetation in the area. Pico Branco is the second-highest peak on Porto Santo and can be reached via the official hiking trail PR1 – Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã.

The trail is moderately challenging and takes you through mostly arid, desert-like scenery, characteristic of Porto Santo. The only greenery you’ll encounter along the way comes from the resilient conifer trees scattered throughout the landscape. Despite the dry surroundings, this vegetation adds a unique charm to the hike and contrasts beautifully with the surrounding terrain.

At the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views that stretch across the island and out to the Atlantic Ocean, making it a fantastic spot for both reflection and photography. It’s especially breathtaking at sunset when the light softens and enhances the rugged beauty of the island. Along the way, you’ll also pass by the historic Furna dos Homiziados, a cave once used as a hideout for fugitives escaping pirates or local authorities, adding a touch of history to the journey.

The best times to visit are early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy the most comfortable conditions. Proper footwear and water are essential, as parts of the trail can be steep and rocky. Visiting Miradouro do Pico Branco is not only an adventure but also an opportunity to experience the raw, untouched beauty and rich history of Porto Santo.
