One of the nicest ways to get to Mürren is via the Mürren BLM mountain train. From Lauterbrunnen, you ride a cable car up to Grütschalp. Then transfer to a small train that traverses the mountain, ending in the alpine village Mürren. The full journey takes about 20 mins.
Once in Mürren, you can simply wander the village, eat at a restaurant with a view, hike in many directions, or visit viewpoints higher up the mountain. Check the map for more activities near Mürren.
When you are done in Mürren, you can return the same way. Or if you want a different view on the way back, you can instead ride a cable car from Mürren down to Stechelberg in the valley. Then a bus back to Lauterbrunnen.
We love this outing for travelers on a budget because it delivers top-class views for such a low price.
It's also great for those who don't want to hike or have limited mobility. You get a lot of variety and great views with minimal exertion.
💡Tip: If only some of your group wants to hike, send the non-hikers on the train while the others hike to Mürren on the Mountain View trail. Meet up at Allmendhubel (end of trail) or Mürren for lunch.
This is one of the most affordable mountain journeys, especially compared to others in this region. A round trip ticket from Lauterbrunnen to Mürren is about CHF 24.
You can purchase tickets for the cable car and train at the Grütschalp cable car station or via the SBB website or mobile app.
Since this journey is part of the public transport network, it is included in the Swiss Travel Pass, SBB GA, and SBB Day Passes. It's also free with the Berner Oberland Pass.
Note: In summer 2024, the vintage train cars will be replaced with a modern version.
