Berggasthaus Schäfler is a classic Swiss mountain hut on a peak with ridgetop views of the Alpstein mountain range. Sunrise and sunset from this hut are absolutely spectacular!

The hut has simple but clean and comfortable rooms, both private rooms for 2 - 6 people as well as less expensive dormitory bunks. Bathrooms are shared, no shower.

Your booking fee includes breakfast but not dinner, which can be purchased separately at the restaurant (cash or card).

Experienced hikers use this as a starting point for challenging multi-day trails wandering through the Alpstein range. But casual hikers and families are also welcome, making for a memorable stay during an Appenzell holidays. See hike suggestions for this area.

How to get there

This hut is much easier to reach than most Swiss mountain huts, with a cable car ride and moderate 90 min hike.

Get to Wasserauen, easily reached by train or car. Ride the Ebenalp cable car up the mountain. Then follow the trail up to hut, about 2.3 km (1.4 mi), gaining 320m of elevation. It took us about 1h15 at a motivated pace. See trail map.

You must carry your overnight bag, no luggage delivery. Bring a sleeping bag liner and toiletries (none provided by hut).

Note: There's no WiFi at the hut. There's no power outlets in the room but they have a charging station in on the main floor.

Location: Schäfler, 9057 Schwende

Website: schaefler.ch

Price: start around CHF 160/double room for 2 adults, CHF 48/1 person in dormitory bunk.

Children are welcome and under age 13 stay for a reduced price.

Dogs are not allowed in the rooms but may sleep in a neighboring shelter. You should bring a mat for the dog to sleep on.
