Säntis, standing at 2,502 meters, is the highest peak in the Appenzell Alps (my home area, by the way) and a beloved destination for breathtaking views, outdoor adventures, and alpine charm. Its central location offers panoramic views that stretch across six countries: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, France, and Italy, making it one of the most scenic spots in the region.
Reaching the summit is easy and enjoyable, thanks to the Säntis Cable Car. Departing from Schwägalp, the ride takes just 10 minutes and provides stunning views of the alpine landscape. Once at the top, you’ll find a network of viewing platforms, where you can marvel at the dramatic peaks and rolling hills below.
Säntis is a year-round destination with activities for every season. In summer, it’s a paradise for hikers, with trails that range from leisurely strolls to challenging routes that traverse the surrounding landscape. In winter, the area transforms into a snowy wonderland, with snowshoeing, sledding, and winter hiking available at Schwägalp.
At the summit, the Panorama Restaurant Säntisgipfel serves delicious Swiss specialties with unbeatable views. For those who wish to stay longer, the Schwägalp region offers accommodations and the Säntis – the Hotel, which provides a cozy base for exploring the area.
Seraina’s Tip: Combine your trip to Säntis with a visit to the Schwägalp Nature Discovery Park, where you can learn about the region’s flora and fauna while enjoying easy walking trails.
