I've hiked this mountain about a dozen times. It offers a variety of trails to suit all skill levels, from a beginner-friendly trail via the ropeway that takes 5 hours roundtrip to a relatively flat trail that takes 2-3 hours. This trail starts from Tenjindaira Ropeway Station.

Starting Point: The hike starts at the upper station of the Tanigawa Ropeway, Tenjindaira, which sits at 1,319 meters. From here, you’re already surrounded by sweeping views, making it an ideal launch point for exploring the mountain.

Trail Details:

  • Distance: Approximately 7 km round trip

  • Elevation Gain: Around 800 meters from Tenjindaira to the summit

  • Time Required: 5 hours round trip

Route Description:

  • Tenjindaira to the Ridge Line: From the ropeway station, follow the well-marked trail leading up through alpine meadows and forested areas. This initial section offers a gentle incline, providing a pleasant start as you ascend toward the ridge.

  • Traversing the Ridge: Once you reach the ridge, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged, with sections that require careful footing, especially near the summit. This part of the hike offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

  • Approaching the Summit: The final approach to the summit of Mt. Tanigawa (1,977 meters) is challenging, with exposed sections and rocky terrain. The breathtaking panoramic view from the top makes the effort worthwhile, showcasing vistas of the surrounding mountains, valleys, and, on a clear day, even glimpses of the Japanese Alps.
