Hike
6-8h
There aren’t many English resources on this hike (YAMAP), but if you’re looking for a stunning mountain range without the usual crowds, Mt. Sennokura is a hidden gem. I first went with a group of six in May 2021, and it quickly became one of my all-time favorite hikes. Start from Tairappyo Trailhead.
Trailhead: Mt. Tairappyo Trailhead
Accessibility:
By Car: There is a free parking lot at the Tairappyo Trailhead, the starting point for hikes up both Mt. Tairappyo and Mt. Sennokura. With around 150 spaces, it can fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so arriving early is recommended.
By Public Transport: Take a bus from Echigo-Yuzawa Station to the Tairappyo Tozanguchi bus stop. The bus ride takes approximately 40 minutes, followed by a short walk to the trailhead.
Accommodation:
Tairappyo Mountain Hut: Located along the trail to Mt. Tairappyo, this mountain hut operates from May to October and accommodates up to 25 people. It’s an ideal place to rest before or after summiting Mt. Sennokura. Reservations are required for overnight stays, so be sure to contact the caretaker at 090-7832-0316 in advance.
Trail Overview:
Distance: 13 km (loop)

Ridge to Mt. Sennokura: After reaching the summit of Mt. Tairappyo, continue along a ridge that leads to Mt. Sennokura, which stands at 2,026 meters. The ridge offers breathtaking views and a more tranquil hiking experience, as this trail sees fewer visitors compared to other peaks in the Tanigawadake range.
