Bar Ricci is easily spotted in the Piazza Medici in the picturesque town of Fivizzano, Italy. The famous Medici fountain is found in this piazza, and you can have a great coffee or cappuccino here.
If you go on Tuesday mornings you'll find the market circling the fountain and spilling down the streets from the Piazza. It's a grand and sprawling market.
The bar has its own pasticceria, and the treat for us is in the picture of the pastry--it's a zeppole or Zeppole di San Giuseppe as they make it here in northern Tuscany. The pastry is made for the Feast of St Joseph on March 19.
But the Bar Ricci has them most of the year.
(Zeppole di San Giuseppe are made from choux pastry and filled and topped with pastry cream (crema pasticcera), dusted with powdered sugar, and crowned with a syrupy Italian cherry or three.)
In any case, the Bar Ricci also makes a fine perch for watching the Medieval feastival of the season, the Disfida di Fivizzano, pitting local contrade (neighborhoods) against each other in a tournament of archery skill.
Besides great pastries, there's also gelato at Bar Ricci.
