Búðakirkja is a unique black chapel located on the remote Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. Surrounded by the Búðahraun lava field and the majestic looming volcano of Snæfellsjökull, the tiny church stands alone in its eerie landscape. In summer months, travelers can hear the strange “drumming” calls of the Common Snipe - adding to the surreal atmosphere. The original Búðakirkja church was built in 1703 but the current black structure was resurrected in 1987 after a single parishioner's determined effort. Inside, visitors can explore the historic graveyard and relics such as an ancient bell and chalice. It's the perfect spot for adventurers looking to explore an unending dreamscape seemingly straight out of a fairy tale.
