Geirsstaðakirkja in East Iceland is an awe-inspiring replica of a 1000 year old turf church, complete with a carved wooden altar, wooden cross, and benches out front to enjoy the view. The building was erected in 1999-2001 and is unique in that it is faced east and west according to an ancient tradition. Geirsstaðakirkja even has a Viking ship built from turf and rock right nearby!
