Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe is one of the most exciting and popular destinations to visit in Switzerland. Standing at 3,454 meters above sea level, it offers stunning panoramic views as far as the Black Forest and the Vosges!
The name “Jungfrau” in German translates to “virgin” – and is probably made in reference to nuns in a convent which was located at the foot of the mountain. The Jungfraujoch refers to the mountain range saddled between Mönch and Jungfrau (the word "joch" literally means saddle). So just to be clear: you are not actually going up to the top of Jungfrau…you are at the mountain ranges IN BETWEEN, to SEE the Jungfrau!
I recommend you to go in the morning and spend about 3-4 hours. to experience the various activities listed below:
The Sphinx Observatory
Ice Palace
Alpine Sensation
Lindt Home of Chocolate
Jungfrau railways exhibition
Snowfun Park (mid-May to mid-October only)
Do watch my Youtube guide to get a comprehensive overview of what you can do at the Jungfraujoch.
For winter itineraries: You can also enjoy some snow and sledging fun on the Jungfrau Eiger run which starts from Eigergletscher down to Kleine Schidegg. You can combine this after your visit to the Jungfraujoch and return down by the Eiger Express to go on the sledge which you can rent directly on site. The Jungfrau Eiger run is open from 16 November to 27 April, subject to snow conditions. More information here
Directions:
To get to the Jungfraujoch, the fastest way is to start from the Grindelwald Terminal and take the Eiger Express cableway up to Eigergletscher, followed by a transfer up by the train up to the very top.
